About Tenderfoot State Forest

Located in Aitkin County, Minnesota, Tenderfoot State Forest spans over 17,000 acres of predominantly forested land consisting of mixed hardwoods and conifers typical of the upper Midwest. The forest terrain is gently rolling with an abundance of glacial landforms, wetlands, and small lakes that contribute to diverse wildlife habitat. Established in 1963, the forest has been managed for timber production, wildlife habitat, and dispersed recreation. Visitors can explore over 60 miles of designated trails that support hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, and snowmobiling in the winter months. Numerous small ponds and streams are home to waterfowl and fish species popular with anglers. Tenderfoot State Forest provides visitors with opportunities for birdwatching, hunting, and primitive camping, offering a quieter alternative to larger, more developed state and national forests nearby. The forest’s remote setting and well-maintained trail network make it a favored destination for outdoor enthusiasts seeking solitude and natural beauty. Key landmarks include rich wetland areas that attract diverse birds such as loons and warblers, and scenic viewpoints overlooking forested valleys. The forest’s combination of ecosystem variety and multi-use recreation preserves Minnesota’s northern forest character along this stretch of the state’s landscape.
